Middlebury, home of the Middlebury Natural Foods Co-op, was settled in the late 1700s along Otter Creek. The great falls in the center of town powered early industry. The Creek is now the setting for several restaurants featuring seasonal outdoor seating. Our historic downtown houses a lively mix of retail stores where one can buy sporting goods, clothing, gifts and cards, music, books, and unique items from around the world. At the Vermont State Craft Center and other local shops, the discriminating buyer will find the work of many of Vermont’s top artists and craftsmen.

Middlebury is the ideal base from which to pursue recreational activities in any season. Hiking, skiing, biking, and water sports are popular and Middlebury College operates an 18-hole golf course as well as downhill and cross-country ski areas. Music and performing arts events take place throughout the year and include the annual Festival on the Green and the After Dark Music Series, which feature national and international music and theater productions. At the Town Hall Theater and Middlebury College’s Center for the Arts, the public can attend dance performances, stage productions, and concerts.
